“Obeah” is a broad term for African diasporic religious and spiritual practices found primarily in West African traditions. It is practiced in the Caribbean, the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Somewhat comically (to me, anyway) many spiritual practices around the world that do not inhabit the same Venn diagram space as the world’s major religions are often automatically aligned with evil, obeah sharing this dubious honor. Obeah Woman is me having quite a good time standing in that malignment. As uncomfortable as one may be with the misguidedly-denigrated spiritual spaces and customs this piece explores, one thing is certain – you’ll be moving your body to the grooves at one point or another! Such is the power of obeah!
